When ChatGPT was released at the end of 2022, AI suddenly became something everyone was talking about. The warnings covered everything from cheating at school and fake images to disappearing jobs – and, from some researchers and business leaders, the possibility that future systems could become difficult to control. In 2024 the EU adopted a law on AI.
The verdict: what happened next?
The verdict is not yet in. Some risks are already visible, such as disinformation and copyright questions; others are speculative. History is full of technologies that inspired dread and then became part of everyday life – and of a few where the warnings ought to have been taken more seriously.
